GATAN

About GATAN

GATAN is a Japanese learning game by Kotaro Design Lab. Choose an answer and let your train—or sausage—roll. Mistakes reveal explanations, rather than ending your learning.

Start with N2. N1, N3, N4 and N5 are planned. Italian and English explanations are available. You can try without an account; Google sign-in is being prepared and is not yet available.

What you can practise

Kanji, vocabulary, grammar, reading and listening. We represent the 19 N2 item formats. Reading and orthography drills are supplementary drills; their short prompts are not replicas of the actual test. Speaking and free writing are not included in the JLPT.

The short test has 19 questions and 20 minutes. It is not a full timed JLPT simulation. The actual N2 has 105 minutes for language knowledge and reading, and approximately 50 minutes for listening. Our percentages are raw practice accuracy, not JLPT scaled scores or pass probabilities.

Current content

2,762 practice items, including 1,312 words used in two drill directions, 100 grammar-form questions, and original reading/listening passages. Imported word readings and original explanations are undergoing further editorial review. Content is not an exhaustive inventory of N2 knowledge.

A clear promise

Small, replayable practice with visible explanations and progress. We do not guarantee passing the JLPT. GATAN is independent and is not affiliated with the Japan Foundation, JEES or Google. Report an ambiguous answer or pronunciation through okuyama.kotaro@gmail.com, ideally with the question text.
